Brief overview of the role

This is a level 3 laboratory technician apprenticeship with Colas, a major infrastructure development company. The successful apprentice will work in a construction materials testing laboratory, developing a range of industry specific skills, knowledge and behaviours.

Job Summary:

To be involved with Safety Procedures in the laboratory. Undertake technical service work in the laboratory on various Colas products, and to assist with site work and visits as required. Help in maintaining the laboratory facilities in good order. Maintain all laboratory records for work undertaken. Aid with quality procedures and other projects as required. Assist in testing and equipment calibrations in accordance with the relevant standards and/or procedures. (These tests/procedures should only be performed when competency has been successfully assessed). Provide support with the evaluation of the results of tests and calibrations as required, including reporting opinions and interpretations. Undertake training (internal/external) as required.


Principal accountabilities:

  • To be involved in the effective and efficient running of the laboratory
  • Observe the safety policies of the company and the department at all times
  • Ensure that all operations carried out within our area of responsibility are undertaken with full regard for the safety of visitors, other members of staff and yourself
  • Be responsible for the undertaking of general Technical Services work both in the laboratory and on site as required by the seasonal programme
  • Assure that work is carried out speedily and to customer satisfaction
  • Carry out other appropriate duties as assigned by your line manager

Requirements and prospects

Desired skills

  • Some experience in laboratory work would be desirable
  • Report writing and maintenance of laboratory records
  • Able to communicate effectively with other departments within Colas

Personal qualities

  • Positive commitment to safety
  • Good communication skills
  • Adaptable and versatile
  • Will be required to travel – sometimes at short notice

Desired qualifications


  • GCSE’s in Maths, English and Science is desirable
  • Good working knowledge of science subjects
  • Full clean driving licence due to travel requirements of the role
  • Ideally some industry knowledge

The Advanced Level Apprenticeship provides individuals with a sound knowledge base that can support them in undertaking further learning and development of their careers in material testing and related areas.

This pathway also offers the participant an opportunity to work in a variety of settings, supporting a wide range of engineering projects.

40 hours Monday - Friday|
£5.00 - £8.10/hour, depending on age/experience
